The european plane can be recognized by the distinctive pattern of its bark, the “camouflage” appearance. The top and oldest oldest layer of the bark peels off in summer. European planes can get very old, they are highly resilient and tolerate drought, heat and drastic pruning very well, which is why they are often seen in European cities. They are one of the oldest tree species on earth.

But it’s not just the bark that is very special—the wood also has a quite unique look: when cut radially, it reveals a decorative pattern. Scaly, glossy, brown-red patches—known as “mirrors”—are embedded in a lighter shade of red. This appearance is highly valued in interior design, for furniture, veneers, inlays and woodturning, and is therefore frequently used.

The wood is easy to work with, clean surfaces and edges can be achieved. Due to the often irregular grain pattern and the wood rays, sharp tools are essential.
